The Wolfpack defeated its fourth ACC opponent of the season Sunday
PITTSBURGH – No. 42 NC State women's tennis collected its fourth conference win Sunday afternoon as it defeated Pittsburgh 5-2 to improve its record 11-6, 4-4 ACC.
Â
The team continued to show improvement in doubles play as it captured the decision for the second consecutive match. Bianca Moldovan and Joanna Nalborska downed Amber Washington and Callie Frey 6-2 and Martina Frantova and Tayla Stenta closely followed with another 6-2 victory over Lolade Ogungbesan and Audrey Ann Blakely.
Â
Nalborska finished first for the Pack in singles play, netting a quick 6-4, 6-3 win over Pitt's only ranked player, No. 85 Blakely. Shortly after, No. 63 Frantova collected her third consecutive straight-set victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Ogungbesan at the No. 1 singles position. Amanda Rebol clinched the dual for the Wolfpack with a 6-0, 0-6, 6-4 victory over Gabriela Rezende.
Â
The Pack's final point was earned by Bianca Moldovan as she came back to defeat Frey 7-6 (8-6), 0-6, 10-4.
Â
SIMON SAYS:
"We played a tough match with Pitt today for sure, which we expected, and I'm very happy that we were able to pull it out. I thought we made a great start in doubles, and that was important because the beginning in singles was extremely close.
Once again Martina and Joanna did great jobs at the top of the singles lineup, setting the tone and keeping their noses out front all the way through. Front running is something we have talked about often, not to relax when we have a lead, and both of them managed their matches extremely well in that regard. Overall, we're always happy to get the win on the road and even our conference record up. I'm very proud of the progress the team has made and I'm looking forward to much more over the next few weeks. Go Pack!" – Simon Earnshaw, head coach
