Tyler Ross and Hanna Sommer both homer on the day
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team had a tough day on the field Saturday, as the squad dropped a pair of contests in the DoubleTree RDU Challenge at Dail Stadium. The Wolfpack fell to Northern Illinois in the first game, 7-3, and dropped the second game to Loyola Chicago by the same margin.
NC State moves to 11-11 on the season, while Northern Illinois improves to 11-7 and Loyola improves to 15-6.
Quick Hits (Versus NIU)
- NC State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead against Northern Illinois after scoring a pair of runs in the first inning.
- Lana Van Dyken drew a walk to start the frame, stole second and scored on a double by Tyler Ross down the left field line.
- Ross later scored on an RBI groundout by Maggie Hawkins to make it 2-0.
- Northern Illinois took a 3-2 lead in the third inning after a wild pitch plated a run before a two-run homer by Abby Howlett.
- The Wolfpack responded in the bottom of the frame to knot the score at three, following Ross' team-leading 10th home run of the season, a solo homer to left field.
- Unfortunately for NC State, NIU tacked on two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings to extend its lead to 7-3 and the Wolfpack was unable to rebound from the deficit.
