No. 25 men's tennis falls 4-1 to No. 6 Texas Tech Friday afternoon
RALEIGH – No. 25 NC State men's tennis dropped its highest ranked matchup of the season Friday afternoon when it fell 4-1 to No. 6 Texas Tech.
NC State adds another loss to its home record as UNC-Wilmington snapped the home win streak with a 4-3 defeat of the Pack Thursday afternoon. The Wolfpack is now 8-2 at home and 10-5 overall.
The Pack played it tough early but dropped the doubles point with losses to the No. 2 ranked duo and a narrow 7-5 edge by Jolan Cailleau and Connor Curry over Simon Norenius and Michael Ogden. Nick Horton and Thomas Weigel captured a ranked 6-3 doubles win over No. 56 Bjorn Thomson and Alex Sendegeya.
Due to the severe drop in temperature the match was played until a winner was determined. Texas Tech got an early start capturing three singles wins to clinch the dual within the first four finishes. Prior to the early finish, Weigel netted a win over No. 87 Sendegeya 6-4, 6-4. No. 1 and No. 2 singles were left unfinished with scores in the Wolfpack's favor. The level of competitiveness among the four ranked players in these two singles spots drew out the time of play for the Pack. In the No. 1 singles, No. 83 Norenius split sets with No. 18 Felipe Soares, tied for his highest ranked opponent of the season. At the No. 2 singles, No. 72 Horton took the first set 6-4 and was up 4-3 over No. 97 Hugo Dojas in the second set, looking to be headed towards a sweep at the conclusion of the match.
NC State returns to action Sunday as it hosts No. 55 ODU at 1 p.m. followed by a 4:30 matchup against UNC-Greensboro.
