RALEIGH – Anthony 'Cat' Barber scored 32 points and the Wolfpack had an early double-digit lead, but the seventh-ranked University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill rallied to defeat the NC State men's basketball team 80-68 on Wednesday night.
Â
Barber was phenomenal once again, posting his eighth outing this season with 30 or more points. Barber, the ACC's leading scorer, started the game 7-for-9 shooting and had 13 points just 5:28 into the contest. Behind Barber's heroics and some strong offensive reboudning, NC State rolled out to a 23-10 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half.Â
"I don't very often look at the clock so I can't tell you exactly what it was, but I knew they were kicking our tails. The crowd was going wild and they were making shots," UNC Chapel Hill head coach Roy Williams said.
Â
Abdul Malik Abu added 15 points and six rebounds, while Caleb Martin chipped in 11 points. Brice Johnson led UNC Chapel Hill (23-5, 12-3) with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Â
Key Stats: NC State was limited to 36.9 percent shooting for the night and UNC-CH converted 52.8 percent of its shots inside the arc. The two rivals entered the game among the ACC's best offensive rebounding teams, and each team hauled in 17 offensive rebounds. NC State held a 15-7 advantage on second-chance points, but the Tar Heels controlled the paint and outscored the Pack 42-24.
Â
Turning Point:Â A 19-4 run midway through the first half turned a 23-10 Wolfpack lead into a tie game at 29-29. UNC-CH would go on to lead 38-33 at halftime and lead by double digits for the last 12 minutes of the game.
Gott Said It:
"I loved our start. We had a great start and didn't sustain it. But I thought our guys competed really hard. At about the 10 minute mark in the second half, it was about a four point game and they had a run there that separated them. That was really the difference. In the second half Brice Johnson was terrific. They had too much offensive firepower for our guys. We had some good looks and missed some shots in that stretch. In my opinion, that was the name of the game in the second half. That is when they seemed to pull away a little bit. They are a good team and I thought their offense in the second half was pretty good."
Up Next: Â The Pack (14-14, 4-11) heads to Syracuse Saturday, Feb. 27 for a 2 p.m. game. The game will be televised on ACC Network affiliates, WRAL-TV locally in the Triangle.Â
