RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State junior Pete Renda and North Carolina redshirt junior Joey Ward shared Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week honors this week, the ACC announced on Tuesday.
Renda, from Toplin, Pa., wrestling at 184 pounds, upset ninth-ranked Sammy Brooks of Iowa, 7-3, to lead the fourth-ranked Wolfpack to a 21-17 upset win over the second-ranked Hawkeyes in Iowa City. The team win was the first by an ACC school over Iowa in wrestling.
Renda, ranked 16th nationally before the match, avenged an earlier, 8-7 loss to Brooks in the Midlands Championships on Dec. 30, and his win gave the Wolfpack a 15-14Â lead with two bouts remaining, setting the stage for NC State heavyweight Nick Gwiazdowski to clinch the dual meet victory.
With the win, Renda moved up to 12th in this week's national rankings by both FloWrestling and InterMat.
Renda is the fifth different NC State grappler to earn ACC Wrestler of the Week honors this season.
• Senior heavyweight Nick Gwiazdowski, who led NC State to a monumental upset of fourth-ranked Oklahoma State was named ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 8. Gwiazdowski defeated 10th-ranked Denzel Dejournette of Appalachian State, 11-4, and fourth-ranked Austin Marsden of Oklahoma State, 7-4. His win over Marsden secured the Wolfpack's 19-15 team victory over fourth-ranked Oklahoma State in Stillwater in the dual's final bout.
• Senior Tommy Gantt was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 5 after winning six straight matches - including two against nationally-ranked opponents - in the 157-pound weight class and becoming the Wolfpack's first individual champion at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Illinois.
• Sophomore Michael Boykin was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week on Feb. 2, after leading the Wolfpack to a pair of dual match victories at Pittsburgh and at West Virginia with individual wins over a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers in the 197-pound weight class.
• Sophomore Kevin Jack was named the ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week just last week. He won both of his matchups this week, a pair of wins over top-10 foes. In a battle of the top-two ranked 141 pound wrestlers in the ACC, Jack defeated #7 Chishko of Virgina Tech, 3-2, for the Pack's first win over the ACC dual. He then followed up with a 4-2 win over #6 Manley of Missouri on Sunday. He did not allow a takedown in either bout this past weekend.
Up Next: The Wolfpack will next be in action at the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship which will be hosted by the University of Virginia on Sunday, March 6. The one-day tournament, which will take place at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va., will begin at 11 a.m.
