RALEIGH – The NC State men's basketball team earned a 77-74 win over Clemson on Saturday afternoon at PNC Arena. A balanced effort, tenacious offensive rebounding and timely shooting helped lift the Pack to its third consecutive win at home.
Balanced Scoring: On a day when Anthony 'Cat' Barber had a rare off performance, Abdul-Malik Abu, Maverick Rowan and Caleb Martin picked up the ACC's leading scorer in the victory. Abu earned his 12th double-double of the season and his seventh in ACC play with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Rowan scored 20 points on 8-for-15 shooting and made four 3-pointers. Caleb Martin came off the bench for four treys of his own and finished with 16 points and six rebounds. It was the second time this season Rowan and Caleb Martin have each made four 3-pointers in the same game. It was also the eighth time this season each player has made four long-range shots in a game.
Barber, fifth in the nation and tops in the conference with 23.7 points per game, finished with eight points but he did hand out five assists.
Clemson's Jaron Blossomgame scored a career-high 33 points - with 19 points coming in the second half.
Glass Work: NC State outrebounded the Tigers 43-30, dominating both ends of the floor. The Pack had 16 offensive rebounds that translated into 14 second-chance points. Abu and BeeJay Anya combined for six putback dunks and totaled nine dunks altogether on the day. Abu's 16 rebounds was just one shy of his career best of 17, which he pulled in two weeks ago at Duke.
Turning Point: Neither team led by more than five points throughout the contest until NC State opened up a 71-63 with 3:28 left in the game. A 3-point play by Blossomgame got Clemson within 71-70, but NC State answered with a jumper by Rowan and two foul shots by Barber. Barber added another pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining and Clemson missed a desperation attempt at the buzzer to give NC State the win.
Gott Said It: "Really proud of our team. We had a day where Cat really struggled and we found ways to score from a lot of different places. That was important. We haven't had very many nights where Cat has struggled like that. It says a lot about our team that we were able to generate offense and play through that. In the first half Caleb made some big shots that gave us a lift. In the second Maverick made some really big shots and the third thing that really helped us was offensive rebounding. We had a lot of points off offensive rebounds. We had points off the backboard, points from Maverick and points from Caleb. Malik did a nice job and Cody hit a big '3' for us. Collectively we overcame a night where Cat really struggled."
Up Next: NC State (14-13, 4-10) hosts UNC Chapel Hill Wednesday night in PNC Arena at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast by on ACC Network Stations, WRAL locally in the Triangle.
