RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 3 NC State held an 11-10 lead over No. 8 Virginia Tech with four bouts left, but the Hokies won three straight by decision and clinched the ACC dual heading into the final bout. The loss was the first of the season for the Wolfpack (21-1, 4-1 ACC) after a school record 21 wins to begin the 2015-16 campaign.
NC State won all three battles where both wrestlers were ranked in the top-10, but the Hokies (14-2, 4-0 ACC) won six of the 10 matches and came away with the road win.
With the win, Virginia Tech clinches the ACC dual match title, and the Pack finishes at 4-1 for its best regular season record since also going 4-1 in 2004.
The dual started at 125 pounds, as the Hokies earned a decision then a major at 133 to jump out to a 7-0 lead.
#3 Kevin Jack earned the first of three Pack victories in match-ups versus top-10 foes when he downed #7 Solomon Chishko, 3-2 at 141 pounds. Jack scored the bout's lone takedown in the first period and each wrestler traded escapes and a late Jack stall was not enough. The win was Jack's 13th in a row, and the 50th of his NC State career.
The Hokies scored another decision at 149 in the second battle between unranked grapplers - VT won both (133).
#4 Tommy Gantt got the Pack closer, improving to a perfect 20-0 on the season with a 4-1 win over #7 Nick Brascetta. Gantt scored the lone takedown of the match, and after both recorded an escape, Gantt's ride time point made the final 4-1.
Gantt's win made the dual 10-6 at the halfway point.
The Pack's only lead of the day came when #6 Max Rohskopf dominated #12 David McFadden and scored a 15-0 technical fall and five team points for the Pack. Rohskopf got an early takedown, and quickly turned it into a four-point near fall, and a two-point near fall at the end of period put Rohskopf up 8-0. Rohskopf continued the attack, and he rode out McFadden the third period to get the bonus point win. Rohskopf is now 12-0 at 165 points this year, and has only been taken down once in those 12 matches.
The technical fall put the Pack up 11-10 with four bouts left, but the Hokies scored three straight decisions and clinched the dual going into the final bout, 19-11.
The Pack closed strong, as #1 Nick Gwiazdowski defeated #2 Ty Walz 4-2 in a battle of two unbeaten grapplers.
