EVANSTON, ILL. - For the second year in a row, the NC State wrestling team came away with an individual title at the prestigious Midlands Championships. Junior Kevin Jack, the No. 2 seed at 141 pounds for the tournament, went a perfect 5-0 and brought home top honors over two days of action. Ranked fifth nationally, Jack defeated the nation's No. 6 wrestler (3-2) in the semifinals and then the nation's No. 3 wrestler (1-0) in the finals Friday night.
At the 54th annual Midlands Championships, NC State placed five total grapplers on the podium. In addition to Jack's win at 141 pounds, redshirt-sophomore Jamal Morris (133), redshirt-senior Sam Speno (149) and senior Pete Renda (184) all finished fifth, while redshirt-junior Michael Macchiavello (184) took seventh. As a team, NC State placed sixth in the field with 78 points.
After a 3-0 day yesterday, Jack's first bout ended in some controversy. Facing off against the tournament's three seed, and No. 6 nationally ranked Anthony Ashnault of Rutgers, the two were tied 2-2 when the horn sounded at the end of the third period. But the refs went to a video review and called Ashnault for unnecessary roughness when he slapped Jack in the head with just one second left. The call gave Jack a penalty point, and the 3-2 win to advance to the finals. Jack had previously defeated Ashnault 2-0 just a month ago at the Journeymen Tussle.
In the finals Jack met up with the tournament's top seed, freshman Matthew Kolodzik of Princeton. After a scoreless first period, Jack started the second on top and rode Kolodzik the entire second period. To start the third, Jack was on bottom, and Kolodzik worked ride time down from two minutes to under a minute, but Jack scored an escape with about 30 seconds left for the bout's only point. Jack improves to 20-1 on the season, winning his last 18 matches.
Jack follows up Wolfpack wins by Tommy Gantt (157) and Nick Gwiazdowski (285) last year at Midlands - NC State's first-ever individual titles.
A trio of NC State wrestlers brought home fifth place finishes.
Redshirt-sophomore Jamal Morris returned to the Pack's lineup after missing time the last month, and entering as the No. 12 seed at 133 pounds he placed fifth. A 4-0 start to the tournament yesterday, found Morris in the semifinals today. He dropped matches to the tournament's top seed and then the No. 4 seed, before coming back in the 5th/6th place bout to defeat Rutgers' Scott Delvecchio 7-5.
Redshirt-senior Sam Speno, the No. 5 seed at 149 pounds, also brought home a fifth place finish. Speno was in today's semifinals after a 3-0 mark yesterday. Spent dropped a contest to the top seed and then the No. 16 seed. In the 5th/6th place bout, Speno held a 4-1 lead over No. 6 seed, and No. 19 nationally, Joey Delgado of Oregon State, before Delgado was forced to quit the bout because of injury.
Senior Pete Renda, wrestling unattached as he is redshirting the season, finished fifth at 184 pounds. After being upset yesterday, Renda had to work his way through the consolation bracket today. He started with a 17-0 tech fall over #12 seed Mitch Sliga of Northwestern. Ronda's best win of the tournament came in the next round, a dominating 9-2 win (with over three minutes of ride time) over 2016 NCAA 174-pound champion and No. 2 seeded Myles Martin of Ohio State. Ronda then fell in OT to No. 5 seed, No. 6 nationally, Nathan Jackson of Indiana before ending his day with a medical forfeit in the 5th/6th place bout.
Redshirt-junior Michael Macchiavello came in as the No. 10 seed and finished with a seventh place finish. His day started with an 8-7 decision over the No. 9 seed, and No. 13 nationally, Emory Parker of Illinois. Trailing at the start of the third period, Macchiavello scored two takedowns in the final period for the come back win. He then fell to No 4 seed, No. 8 nationally, Samuel Brooks of Iowa 3-2. In the 7th/8th place bout, Macchiavello earned a medical forfeit over Ohio State's Myles Martin to secure seventh place. On the weekend, Macchiavello finished with a 6-2 mark, his only losses to a pair of foes ranked in the top-eight nationally.
To start the day on Friday, the Pack had three reach the semifinals and another six in the consolation brackets.
