Wolfpack Falls to Kansas State in Paradise Jam Opener

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – The NC State women's basketball team (4-1) dropped its opening game of the 2016 Paradise Jam, falling 67-50 to Kansas State Thursday afternoon at the UVI Sport & Fitness Center.
 
Jennifer Mathurin (12 points) and Ashley Williams (10) led the Wolfpack in scoring on an afternoon during which the team struggled from the field by operating at a 16-61 (.262) clip which included a 9-36 (.250) mark from distance.
 
Four Kansas State (4-0) players scored in double figures, with Kindred Wesemann (17) leading the way. The Wildcats shot a very efficient 9-21 (.429) from distance in the contest and earned a 45-37 edge on the boards.

-NC State trailed for 37:10 of the game's 40 minutes.
-The Wolfpack was whistled for seven more fouls than the Wildcats and attempted fewer free throws (16) than Kansas State made (22).
-With one assist, senior Miah Spencer now ranks tied for 10th in program history with 366 in her career. She is tied with recent NC State graduate Len'Nique Brown-Hoskin.
 
NC State and Kansas State slugged through a challenging first quarter which featured the teams shooting a combined mark of 5-29 from the field, 11 total turnovers, and 11 total fouls which put the Wildcats ahead 12-5 after 10 minutes. NC State's second quarter was far better than its first, going 5-11 (.455) from the field and 3-7 (.429) from distance. The Wildcats went a perfect 3-3 from distance in the 2Q, stretching their lead to eight points (29-21) at the conclusion of the opening half.
 
The Wolfpack got off to a hot start in the second half, pulling within six points on two occasions (38-32 and 40-34) in the first six minutes of the third quarter, but Kansas State would use an 8-2 run to close out the stanza with a 12-point lead.
 
The Wildcats were able to keep the Wolfpack at a distance in the fourth quarter, never allowing NC State to cut their lead to single digits. The closest NC State would come over the course of the final 10 minutes was 10 points (48-38) when Miah Spencer hit two free throws 27 seconds into the quarter
 
NC State returns to action at the Paradise Jam on Friday, Nov. 25 against UTEP. Tip-off is set for 3:15 p.m. ET (4:15 p.m. local time) from the UVI Sport & Fitness Center.
