
Pack Fends off Saint Joseph's for Third Place at Paradise Jam

Dennis Smith, Jr., scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Pack
The NC State men's basketball team overcame a slow start to battle back and beat Saint Joseph's, 73-63, Monday night in the third place game of the Paradise Jam played at St. Thomas, USVI.Â
NC State improved to 4-1 on the season.
For the second straight game, NC State was red hot from three-point range in the first half as the Pack went 7-of-11 from long distance in the opening 20 minutes.
Despite the proficient shooting, The Pack still found themselves down 20-9 10 minutes into the game. After a timeout, NC State responded with a 13-0 run capped by a Terry Henderson three-pointer to take the lead. NC State would never trail again as the Pack went into the halftime break with a 34-30 lead.
The Pack stayed aggressive to open the second half, scoring 11 of the first 13 points to take a 45-32 lead with 17:07 to play. The lead stayed in double figures for the majority of the rest of the game. Twice Saint Joseph's was able to cut the lead to seven points, but both times NC State responded by taking the lead back to double digits.
Dennis Smith, Jr., led NC State with 24 points and eight assists - both season-highs. Torin Dorn added 19 points, 13 of which he scored in the second half. Henderson finished with 15 points and Abdul-Malik Abu added 12 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and 18th of his career.
After hitting just nine three-pointers in the first three games, NC State was 25-of-49 from long distance in its final two games of the Paradise Jam.
The Pack finished with 16 assists on 23 made baskets and despite Saint Joseph's grabbing 22 offensive rebounds, were never seriously threatened in the second half.
NC State returns to action Saturday when it hosts Loyola (Chicago) at PNC Arena at 4 p.m. ET, as its final game as part of the Paradise Jam. The game will be shown on ACC Network Extra. Tickets are available at GoPack.com/BuyTickets.
All-Tournament Team: Dennis Smith, Jr., was named to the All-Tournament team which was announced after Creighton defeated Ole Miss in the championship game. The Fayetteville, N.C., native scored over 20 points in all three games and finished the tournament averaging 22.0 points per game and 6.0 assists per game.
