RALEIGH, N.C. - Legendary Wolfpack football coach Dick Sheridan will be honored during the first quarter of Saturday's football game vs. Florida State to mark the 30th anniversary of his winning the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Trophy. The Dodd Trophy celebrates a head coach whose team enjoys success on the gridiron and whose program also represents the highest ideals of scholarship, leadership and integrity on and off the field.
Sheridan, who served as NC State's head coach from 1986-1992, was awarded The Dodd Trophy in 1986 - his first year at NC State. The '86 Wolfpack turned in the program's first winning season in four years, posted an 8-3-1 record and earned an appearance in the Peach Bowl.
Joining Sheridan on the field for the presentation will be Kacie Hudson from the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and the captains of the 1986 Wolfpack team:Â LB Kelvin Crooms, QB Erik Kramer and LB Pat Teague.
Sheridan, who led the Wolfpack to six bowl appearances and a 6-1 mark against UNC during his tenure, posted an overall record of 52–29–3. He was also named the 1986 ACC Coach of the Year.
"Coach Sheridan is beloved by thousands of Wolfpack fans," said NC State Director of Athletics Debbie Yow. "It is a pleasure to honor his tenure at NC State, as well as the 30-year anniversary of receiving the coveted Bobby Dodd award."
Under Sheridan's leadership in Raleigh, four of his players were named All-Americans, and his players earned 24 first-team All-ACC honors and 21 Academic All-ACC accolades.
"Coach Sheridan's commitment to excellence at NC State left a legacy on the gridiron, but also in the classroom," said Gary Stokan, an NC State alum who is President & CEO of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. "His supervision and guidance impacted the lives of countless student athletes who played under his direction in Raleigh."
