Vargas Finishes Third in The Navy Mile

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Luis Vargas, current volunteer assistant and former runner for the NC State track and field and cross country program, took third in The Navy Mile over the weekend. Vargas covered the mile stretch on Pennsylvania Avenue in 4:03.74.
The Angier, N.C., native earned a $1,250 payout for his finish and was one of 14 athletes to break the meet record in the event's second year.

The Navy Mile was the sixth and final stop in the Bring Back the Mile Grand Prix Tour, which is part of a national campaign to elevate and celebrate the storied distance.
Vargas ran among an impressive field featuring several American distance standouts including Riley Masters, Kirubel Erassa, Shadrack Kipchirchir, Jack Bolas and Cory Leslie.
NC State has seen its former athletes post recent success in The Navy Mile the last two years, as Kenyetta Iyevbele captured the mile title in the event's inaugural year.
