RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State women's soccer team is set to face its third consecutive top-10 opponent, as it travels to No. 8 Virginia for the start of a two-match road swing. NC State enters with a 9-5-1 (3-3-1 ACC) record, while Virginia comes into the match with a 10-3-2 (3-2-2 ACC) record.
Both teams enter the match on similar form. UVa has won five of its last 10 matches, while the Pack has earned six wins in its last 10 matches. Both teams are also coming off recent losses to No. 4 Duke.
The match could have a big impact for both teams on the ACC standings. The squads are separated between fifth and seven place in the conference by just one point. A win could send either team into the top half of the conference standings.
A Win Would Be:
The 10th win of the year – most since 2011
The fourth ACC win of the year – most since 1995 and only the second time in program history
The first over Virginia since 2009
The third win over a team ranked in the Soccer America poll
The second win over a top-10 team this season
Pack in the Polls:
The Pack is receiving votes in the NSCAA Poll, checking in at No. 34 in the latest poll and is 28th in the current RPI. In the ACC standings, the Wolfpack sits in seventh place amongst a crowded group of schools in the middle of the table. NC State is just one point from fifth place.
Road Warriors:
NC State has earned three results on the road in ACC play this season, posting two wins and a draw. NC State's 4-1-1 (2-0-1 ACC) away record is one of the best in the conference.
Scouting Virginia:
The Cavaliers are 2-2-1 in its last five matches with the only loss coming from a one-goal decision to No. 4 Duke. The Cavs are 8-0-1 at its home, Klöckner Stadium. Virginia is outscoring its opponents 37-8 on the year and is ranked 11th in the NCAA with 2.47 goals per game and sixth in the country with a 0.667 shutout percentage.
Alexis Shaffer leads Virginia with 22 points from nine goals and four assists. Veronica Latsko has tallied seven goals and Taylor Ziemer has scored five to also lead the Virginia attack.
Youth Movement:
NC State started seven freshmen and four sophomores against Louisville in its last ACC road match, marking its first time this season without an upperclassman in the starting lineup. The Pack has regularly started five freshmen throughout the season. Freshmen have accounted for the last 13 Wolfpack goals and totaled 19 goals and 18 assists for 69 percent of the team's points.
Last Time Out:
NC State fell 1-0 to No. 9 Florida State last Saturday afternoon. The Wolfpack had an impressive second half with six shots, but couldn't get past one of the best defenses in the country. NC State narrowly missed a few scoring chances, as FSU was able to tally a goal and escape with the win.
