NC State Drops Match at No. 8 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, N.C. – Facing its third consecutive top-10 opponent, The NC State women's soccer team dropped a tough 3-1 match at No. 8 Virginia. The Pack moves to 9-6-1 (3-4-1 ACC), while Virginia improves to 11-3-2 (4-2-2 ACC).
Tziarra King scored the Pack's goal for her sixth of the year and the 14th consecutive goal for the Pack from a freshman. King now leads the team with 13 points from six goals and one assist.
Santoro's Take:
"Virginia is a very good team. We were very poor and played our worst game of the year. When you combine those things, that is the result that happened. We'll be fine. We're a good team that had a bad night. We'll regroup and get ready for Sunday."
Match Recap:
Virginia was able to take momentum early in the contest with a pair of goals in the first 12 minutes of play. The quick scores forced the Pack into a come-from-behind situation.
NC State rallied late in the first half, as King scored three minutes before the halftime whistle to bring the Wolfpack back into the match. The goal came after the Pack won the ball in the midfield and Paige Griffiths sent a through ball to King, who weaved through a pair of defenders to get open for the strike. The shot took a deflection on its way through the box and landed in the back of the net.
The Pack entered halftime within reach, trailing 2-1.
NC State had several chances in the second half with shots on goal. However, it was Virginia that converted its chance with a goal in the 49th minute to extended the Cavs' lead to 3-1.
The Pack looked dangerous and got shots off from set pieces throughout the half. Late in the half, Michaella van Maanen nearly ran onto through ball deep in UVa territory, but was judged to be offside.
The Pack had one of its bests attempts of the game in the final minutes. The UVA goalie parried a shot away from goal into the middle of the field. King gained possession and ripped a shot towards the goal, but the keeper was in the right place to make a diving save and push the ball out for a corner.
The Cavs were able to turn away the ensuing corner and hold on for the victory.

NC State faces a quick turnaround with a trip to No. 17 Clemson. The Pack will face its fourth-straight top-25 opponent Sunday at 1 p.m. in Clemson, S.C.
