RALEIGH – Defeating one of its local rivals by the largest margin since 1978, the NC State women's basketball team (16-6, 7-2 ACC) cruised to a 78-49 win over UNC-Chapel Hill Sunday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd at Holliday Gymnasium.
The Wolfpack's margin of victory (29 points) was the largest achieved by the Red and White in the 101-game series since February 19, 1978, when NC State defeated UNC-CH 89-58 in an ACC Tournament game. NC State leads the series by a count of 52-49, with the teams slated to meet next on February 21 in Chapel Hill.
"We just had to keep the energy up and keep the pedal to the floor," junior guard Miah Spencer said in the postgame press conference. "Don't let up and don't relax. Like Dom (teammate Dominique Wilson) said, they could have come back at any time. They could have made a huge run, but we rebounded, got stops on defense, and executed well."
NC State was led by Dominique Wilson's game-high 21 points on 7-13 shooting. She was joined in double figures by Miah Spencer (20 points, eight rebounds, five assists), Ashley Williams (13 and four assists), and Jennifer Mathurin (12 and 12 rebounds). Wilson has scored 166 points in the Wolfpack's last seven games, averaging 23.7 per outing during this stretch of games.
"What a great second half, and especially third period," NC State head coach Wes Moore said. "Holding them (UNC-CH) to just 21 points in the second half was awesome. Again, we just seemed to shoot the ball extremely well there in the second half, knocked down a lot of threes, and as you mentioned, played with a lot of confidence. That was good to see.
"I couldn't be prouder of the team. There's still a long way to go and a lot of work to do, but this was a nice win."

Wilson answered with a three of her own, giving the Wolfpack an 18-17 advantage and a lead which it would not once relinquish for the final 31:43.
Despite shooting just 5-17 (.294) from the field in the second quarter, the Wolfpack managed to outscore the Tar Heels 14-11 thanks in large part to very strong team defense. Williams took two of her three charges during the second quarter, forcing back-to-back Tar Heel turnovers early in the period.
NC State then became red-hot in the third quarter, going 10-15 from the field to increase its 33-28 halftime lead to a margin of 61-39. The Wolfpack did not miss a single field-goal attempt from inside the arc (8-8) during the third quarter.
On a three-pointer by Camille Anderson (six points, 2-3 FG) with 3:53 remaining in the game, NC State would take its largest lead of the contest (75-44).
