Wolfpack’s Strong Start Falls Short at Virginia Tech, 3-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The NC State women's volleyball team opened the match strong, but the Virginia Tech Hokies would not be denied on Sunday and earned a 3-1 (25-15, 13-25, 23-25, 24-26) victory over the visiting Wolfpack inside Cassell Coliseum.
The Wolfpack falls to 11-3 on the season and 0-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while the Hokies improve to 10-4 and 1-1 in conference.
Match Rewind
- NC State got off to a great start in the match, taking a quick 8-3 lead in the first set resulting in a timeout by Virginia Tech.
- After the Hokies rallied to trim the Wolfpack lead to 15-13, NC State scored seven unanswered points to extend its lead to 22-13 and gain control of the frame. The 7-0 run was powered by some strong serving from junior libero Rachel Eppley.
- A kill by sophomore Julia Brown ended the first set, 25-15, as NC State hit .375 with only two errors and Virginia Tech hit .000 with 11 errors.
- In the second set, the Hokies regrouped offensively and were much more efficient to win the frame, 25-13.
- The third set was very tightly contested as neither team led by more than four points and the score was knotted eight times. With the score tied at 22, the Hokies tallied consecutive kills to take a 24-22 lead.
- Following a service error, Tech's Lindsey Owens put down a kill to give the Hokies the 25-23 third-set victory.
- NC State opened fourth set strong, jumping out to an 8-4 advantage forcing a Virginia Tech timeout. The Hokies battled back in the set to keep the Wolfpack from pulling away in the frame.
- The Pack fought off match point twice to knot the score at 24, but an NC State service error and a kill by the Hokies helped Virginia Tech win the fourth set, 26-24, and the overall match, 3-1.
Top Performers
- Sophomore Kaitlyn Kearney and freshman Blayke Hranicka each recorded 13 kills and a .333 attacking percentage to lead the Wolfpack offensively.
- Maggie Speaks, a junior from Camden, S.C., dished out 40 assists to go along with five digs.
- Defensively, junior Rachel Eppley tallied 15 digs and sophomore Emily Harris chipped in with 10.
