Hranicka Leads NC State Past Wake Forest in ACC Home Opener, 3-1

RALEIGH, N.C. – Freshman Blayke Hranicka of the NC State women's volleyball team tallied a career-best 17 kills to lead the Wolfpack to its first ACC victory this season with a 3-1 (15-25, 27-25, 25-21, 27-25) win against Wake Forest Friday night in Holliday Gym at Broughton High School.
The Wolfpack improves to 12-3 (1-2 ACC) on the season, while the Demon Deacons drop to 9-6 (1-2).
Match Notes
- Hranicka's 17 kills bested her previous career high of 16 set against Incarnate Word. The Denver, Colo., native also recorded a career-best four service aces.
- Junior libero Rachel Eppley also turned in a career outing with a personal-best 22 digs in the contest.
- The Wolfpack earned its second consecutive win in the all-time series with the Demon Deacons, as the Pack defeated Wake in the last meeting, 3-2.
Match Rewind
- NC State started the match slow as Wake Forest cruised to a 25-15 first-set win, but the Wolfpack quickly regrouped.
- In the second set, a seesaw battle ensued as neither team was able to gain control and neither team led by more than four points.
- Trailing 22-19, NC State called a timeout and immediately scored three unanswered points out of the timeout to knot the score at 22. Wake staved off set point twice, but the third time was a charm for the Pack as senior Tanna Aljoe served an ace to win the set, 27-25.
- A 4-0 run in the third set helped Wake Forest take an 18-14 advantage, but NC State responded with a 7-1 run to take a 21-19 edge. Leading 22-21, three consecutive points lifted the Wolfpack to the 25-22 third-set win.
- The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair, as the score was tied 15 times and the lead changed five times. Tied at 16, the Demon Deacons put down back-to-back points resulting in an NC State timeout.
- Out of the break, the Wolfpack scored three in a row forcing a Wake Forest timeout at 19-18. Wake saved match point twice, but senior Morgan Cormier put the match away with a kill as NC State won the fourth set, 27-25, and the match, 3-1.

- Hranicka's 17 kills tied the match high in the contest, while sophomore Kaitlyn Kearney put down 15 kills.
- At the setter position, junior Maggie Speaks dished out a season-high and match-high 50 assists to go along with 11 digs to tally her third double-double of the year.
- In addition to Eppley's match-high 22 digs, Cormier also chipped in with 11 digs.

NC State will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 4, when it hosts Duke. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. inside Holliday Gym at Broughton High School.
