Volleyball Breaks Program Record in 3-1 Loss at Pitt

NC State sets rally-scoring era record with 20 blocks
PITTSBURGH – Despite breaking the rally-scoring era record for blocks in a match with 20, the NC State women's volleyball team came up short in its ACC opener at Pitt, 3-1 (25-12, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19), Friday night inside Fitzgerald Field House.
The Wolfpack falls to 11-2 overall and 0-1 in ACC play, while the Panthers move to 11-2 and 1-0 in conference action.
Match Notes
- NC State collected 20 blocks in the contest to set the program record for a single match in the rally-scoring era, which started in 2001. The previous mark was 19 set in 2007 against Boston College at home.
- Sophomore middle blocker Kaitlyn Kearney matched the program record and her career-best with 12 blocks in the match.
Match Rewind
- The Wolfpack struggled to get going in the first set, as the Panthers won the frame, 25-12.
- In the second set, NC State found its offense and played much better defensively to earn a hard-fought 26-24 second-set win.
- The Pack raced out to a quick 5-1 lead in the frame, but Pitt fought its way back in the match. The score was tied 11 times and the lead changed four times in the set.
- Trailing 22-19, NC State scored five unanswered points to take a 24-22 lead. After Pittsburgh fought off set point twice, the Pack put the set away following an attacking error by the home team.
- With Pitt leading 18-17 in the third set, the Panthers went on a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 22-17. NC State staved off set point three times before Pittsburgh was able to claim the frame, 25-21.
- In the fourth set, Pitt took control with a 6-1 run to gain a 17-12 lead and went on to win it, 25-19, to claim the match, 3-1.
Top Performers
- Sophomore Perry Ramsey paced the Pack offensively with nine kills, while Kearney chipped in with eight.
- At the setter position, junior Maggie Speaks handed out 25 assists to go along with six blocks and four digs.
- Senior Tanna Aljoe led the Wolfpack in digs with eight in the contest and freshman Makenzie Kuchmaner contributed seven. Hranicka had eight blocks in addition to Kearney's 12.
