No. 20 NC State men's soccer looked the part of a national contender, forcing sixth-ranked Virginia to claw its way to a 1-0 win on Friday night at Klöckner Stadium.
"We played well enough to get a result," said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. "They took advantage of their chance and we didn't take ours, that's soccer. I was pleased with our performance, the effort, and the quality."
Tanner Roberts provided the Wolfpack (5-2, 1-1 ACC) with the first two shots of the match, the second State's best chance of the night. After breaking through traffic in the 13th minute, Roberts poked a shot off the post. The rebound tumbled to Virginia's keeper.
In the 35th minute, Virginia (4-0-2, 1-0-1) scored the lone goal of the match, on a ball flicked through traffic and tapped home from short range.
The match saw just seven shots, three from the Pack, one on target. State produced seven corner kicks to zero for Virginia. The Cavs were called offside seven times to none for the Pack.
Alex McCauley finished with one save. Holden Fender contributed the only other Wolfpack shot of the match. The Pack had 24 fouls to 11 for Virginia.
"Our philosophy as a team is we're only as good as our next game, whether we win, lose, or draw, so we're preparing for Gardner-Webb on Tuesday," said Findley.
NC State returns to action on Tuesday, September 22 at 7 PM, hosting Gardner-Webb. Streaming and live stats will be available on GoPack.com. Fans can follow along with Twitter updates via @PackMensSoccer.
