Volleyball Primed for Final Nonconference Weekend

Wolfpack to host the Double Tree Cary Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women's volleyball team is set for its final weekend of nonconference play, as the squad will host the Double Tree Cary Classic on Friday and Saturday in Carmichael Gym. The Wolfpack will play three matches in the tournament and they will serve as the final tune-ups before Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play begins.
NC State (8-1) will open competition in the tournament on Friday at 7 p.m. against the Campbell Camels. On Saturday, the Wolfpack will play Hampton at noon before concluding action in the classic against Tennessee at 7 p.m.
Last Time Out
In its last outing of the season, the Wolfpack rallied for a 3-2 win against Incarnate Word after trailing 2-0 in the match. NC State completed play in the Tulane Tournament with a perfect 3-0 record following wins versus Nicholls State (3-1) and Tulane (3-1).
Going Streaking
After dropping a 3-2 decision in its home opener against Ole' Miss, NC State has won five consecutive matches. During the stretch, the Wolfpack is outscoring opponents, 15-5.
Making The Honor Roll
The Wolfpack has had at least two players selected to the all-tournament team in each of its first three tournaments. At the South Carolina Tournament, sophomore Julia Brown was named the MVP and junior Maggie Speaks also garnered a spot on the all-tournament team.
At the Hilton Garden Inn Cary Classic, senior Morgan Cormier and freshman Blayke Hranicka claimed all-tournament honors. Last weekend, sophomore Kaitlyn Kearney and Hranicka earned the honors at Tulane.
Lucking Number Three
In all nine matches this season, NC State has won the third set. The Pack is outscoring opponents, 225-151, in the frame.
Top of the Rankings
NC State currently leads the ACC in opponent hitting percentage (.139) and service aces (69). The Wolfpack's 2.03 aces per set ranks sixth in the NCAA, while its opponent hitting percentage is 28th in the nation.
Individually, Cormier headlines the service aces column with 23 and an average of .70 aces per set that ranks second in the NCAA. Hranicka is tied for eighth in the category with 12. Kearney has tallied 56 blocks, an average of 1.65 blocks per set to lead the conference and occupy fifth in the nation.
Scouting Campbell
The Campbell Camels make the short trip to Raleigh with a 4-6 record on the season, following a 3-0 win against Bethune-Cookman in their last outing. The Camels went 1-2 at the Courtyard Mayo Classic with a pair of losses to North Florida (3-1) and Florida Atlantic (3-0).
NC State and Campbell have met 14 times on the volleyball court, with the Wolfpack emerging victorious in 10 of those contests. NC State won the last meeting in 2012, 3-0, at Reynolds Coliseum.
Freshman Rachel Harty leads the team offensively with 2.28 kills per set, while junior Jenny Tait has put down 2.10. At the setter position, junior Rebecca Ramirez has dished out 6.93 assists per set. Defensively, senior Mary Crema has collected 4.34 digs per set.
As a team, Campbell has an attacking percentage of .147 while opponents have a hitting percentage of .202.
Scouting Hampton
Hampton has gotten off to a tough start in 2015, as the Pirates are still seeking their first win (0-10). The squad dropped its most recent contest at VCU on Tuesday, 3-1.
Saturday's contest will be the first meeting between the two programs.
The Pirates have a team attacking percentage of .083, while opponents have a .255 clip. Reeana Richardson leads the squad offensively with 2.72 kills per set and Allysa Medina is second on the team with 2.69. Brianna Lilly and Alexandra Erhart have split time at the setter position with the former handing out 5.41 assists per set and the latter 5.43 aps. Medina also leads Hampton in digs with 2.81 per set.
Scouting Tennessee
The Tennessee Volunteers are off to its best start in program history, as the squad is unbeaten with a 12-0 record. The Vols most recently defeated College of Charleston on the road, 3-1, to win the College of Charleston Invitational.
NC State and Tennessee have not met in volleyball since 1992, a contest in which the Wolfpack won, 3-1. Tennessee leads the all-time series, 8-4.
Kanisha Jimenez leads the Volunteers offensively with 3.16 kills per set, while Bri Holmes has charted 3.05. At the setter position, Lexi Dempsey has collected 11.00 assists per set and Bridgette Villano owns a team-high 4.65 digs per set.
As a team, Tennessee has recorded an attacking percentage of .268 and has limited opponents to a .133 clip.
