CONWAY, S.C. – Despite outshooting the hosts by a 14-7 mark and controlling a majority of the possession in the match, the NC State women's soccer team (4-5-0) fell 2-1 in overtime at Coastal Carolina Wednesday evening.
With time winding down in the first overtime period, Coastal Carolina's Kayla Christian scored her fifth goal of the season. A failed Wolfpack defensive clearance bounced to the foot of Amber Adams, who fed a sprinting Christian through on a breakaway.
With the Pack trailing 1-0 in the second half, Jackie Stengel scored her fourth goal of the season and the 13th of her career, leveling the match in the 67th minute on a strong individual effort. Stengel ended the contest with a match-high five shots, three of which were on target. Teammate Alexa Allen was not far behind, hitting four attempts, two of which were on frame.
A potential penalty on a collision involving Allen was waved off midway through the opening stanza and the Pack forward generated two other scoring opportunities, one of which necessitated a diving save from Coastal goalkeeper Becca Austin.
Against the run of play, Coastal took a 1-0 lead when Sam Patterson beat freshman goalkeeper Sydney Wootten to a cross inside the penalty area and nodded it inside the far post. Jenna Surdick provided the assist, lofting in a cross following an NC State foul.
NC State returns to action on Sunday, September 20 when it opens Atlantic Coast Conference play at Pittsburgh. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from Ambrose Urbanic Field.
