
Newcomers Lead Wolfpack In First Round Of Cougar Classic

HANRAHAN, S.C. - Led by three freshmen playing in their collegiate debuts, the NC State women's golf team opened the season tied for seventh place after one round at the Cougar Classic, hosted by College of Charleston.
Freshman Leonie Bettel, who was originally pegged to play as an individual, was was inserted into the lineup and led the Wolfpack in her first collegiate round by shooting an even-par 72. Fellow freshmen Naomi Ko and India Clyburn shot rounds of 73 and 74, respectively.
"I had a pretty solid round. No real mistakes," said Bettel. "I finished well and it was a nice opening round to the season."
Clyburn, an England native playing in her first college tournament, took a conservative and consistent approach. "I tried to make pars and was able to make quite a few today," she said.
"It was a lot of fun and an excitng day out there," Ko said. "We had great weather and enjoyed the course. The course was in great shape."
Sarah Bae, a junior transfer from High Point making her NC State debut, carded a 3-over 75 and Cecily Overbey shot 77.
The Pack stands tied with Indiana for seventh in the 20-team event, just four shots behind Florida and Georgia for fourth place. Arkansas is the team leader, holding the top spot over Central Florida by six shots. The Pack holds a slight lead over Michigan and Clemson. Rival UNC-Chapel Hill stands in 13th place, five shots behind the Wolfpack.
Play continues Monday, Sept. 14 at the par 72, 6,204-yard course. NC State will tee off at 9:22 a.m.
