NC State Volleyball Defeats Nicholls State, 3-1

Sophomore Kaitlyn Kearney swats a season-high 17 kills
NEW ORLEANS – The NC State women's volleyball team opened play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic with a 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-12, 25-23) win against Nicholls State Friday afternoon inside Devlin Fieldhouse.
The Wolfpack improves to 6-1 on the year, while the Colonels fall to 3-4.
Match Rewind
- NC State took control of the match in the first set, as the Wolfpack never trailed en route to claiming the set, 25-15. The Pack recorded an attacking percentage of .304.
- The Wolfpack raced out to a 7-3 lead in the frame and continued to roll behind five kills in the set from sophomore middle blocker Kaitlyn Kearney.
- Leading 15-9, NC State scored five unanswered points to take a 20-9 advantage and cruised to the first-set win.
- Nicholls State countered in the second set with a great effort to win it, 25-22. The Colonels emerged victorious in the seesaw battle, as the score was tied 13 times and neither team led by more than three points.
- In the third set, NC State returned to its first-set form recording an attacking percentage of .429 as a team, while limiting Nicholls State to a .077 clip.
- Tied 7-7, the Wolfpack went on an 11-2 run forcing the Colonels to use a timeout but the break in play did not affect the Pack's rhythm as it won the set, 25-12.
- The fourth set was tightly contested, as neither team led by more than four points in the frame. A 5-1 run by the Wolfpack gave the squad a little breathing room, as it pulled ahead, 15-12.
- Nicholls State was able to fight off match point three times, but a kill by freshman Blayke Hranicka sealed the 3-1 win and 25-23 third-set victory.
Top Performers
- Kearney paced the Pack offensively with 17 kills and a .519 attacking percentage, while Hranicka contributed her first double-digit kill performance with 14. The Denver, Colo., native also tallied a .600 hitting percentage.
- Junior Maggie Speaks collected 39 assists from her setter position to go along with seven digs and four blocks.
- Defensively, freshman Kassie Kasper recorded 14 digs, while senior Morgan Cormier chipped in with 11 and sophomore Emily Harris had 10. Kearney also tallied nine blocks, including two solo stops.
