RALEIGH – The NC State women's soccer team (1-2-0) picked up its first win of the 2015 season in its home opener on Thursday evening, defeating the visiting Elon Phoenix by a final score of 2-0. Led by goals from Ella Bonner and Alexa Allen and a strong performance in net by Mackenzie Stelljes, the Pack picked up a win in its third straight home opener under head coach Tim Santoro.
NC State outshot Elon (1-1-0) by a 10-7 margin and earned six corner kicks compared to three for the visitors. Five of Elon's seven shots were on target, however, with Stelljes making five stops to earn the fifth clean sheet of her career.
The Wolfpack broke open the 0-0 tie in the 26th minute on an impressive strike by the first-year Bonner. A Hannah Keogh free kick was sent back out by the defense to the waiting defender, who struck it first time on the volley. Her shot was perfectly placed, just outside the reach of Elon goalkeeper Hanna Macaulay and into the back of the net.
Allen then doubled the lead in the 75th minute, scoring in a similar fashion following well-placed passes from teammates Taylor Porter and Keogh. The junior hit her first touch over Macaulay's outstretched arms and inside the far post.
Stelljes was strong late in the match, stopping shots from Alex Hamer in the 86th minute and Taylor Glenn in the 87th to preserve the win.
NC State will next be in action on Sunday, Aug. 30 at East Tennessee State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from Johnson City, Tenn.
