New student orientation, financial workshops and motivational speakers highlight the week’s events
RALEIGH, N.C. - As student athletes begin their first week of classes, the NC State Athletic Department is hosting several events and classes to provide an easier transition to life at NC State.
Â
The department kicked off the week with new student orientation, which included media training, an alcohol education course and information sessions about their impact on the university's brand.
Â
"It's always a challenge for freshmen and incoming athletes to get acclimated coming back to school," said Senior Associate Athletic Director Sherard Clinkscales. "For the freshmen, we offer them programs to understand the dynamics they are going to face as a student athlete. That is why we have the welcome back orientation."
Â
On Tuesday, the department held its annual Welcome Back Pack Dinner, which featured former NBA player and current motivational speaker, Chris Herren.
Â
Herren was featured in ESPN's 30-for-30 film Unguarded.
Â
"We try to bring someone in that challenges them to not only be better student athletes, but also better people," said Clinkscales. "We want to inspire them to go beyond what they think they might be able to do. I certainly think that Chris Herron did that in his presentation."
Â
On Wednesday night, Jonathan Orr, Executive Director of Athlete Transition Services (ATS), spoke to a group of 200 athletes about financial literacy and building smart saving habits.
Â
ATS was founded by Orr to help athletes have a successful and healthy transition from sports to their next phase of life. Orr primarily spoke on budgeting and saving strategies related to the cost of attendance. He also shared his life story of adjusting to life after the NFL and how he became financially sound after his playing days were over.
Â
"With cost of attendance now, student athletes have more disposable income," said Clinkscales. "We want them to be able to manage that disposable income so that they do the right things with their finances."
Â
The department is also hosting several other events throughout the academic year. In the fall, several speakers will talk to student athletes on different aspects of leadership and team building.
Â
A self-defense class, as well as Pack International and Wolfpack 1st and Goal are also slated for this year.
