NC State Softball Turns Away East Carolina, 6-1

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The NC State softball team earned a 6-1 win against the East Carolina Pirates Wednesday afternoon at ECU Softball Stadium. The second game of the twin bill was canceled due to inclement weather with the Wolfpack leading the contest, 3-0.
State improves to 23-15 overall, while ECU falls to 11-29 on the year.
Quick Hits (Game One)
- East Carolina struck first in the contest with an unearned run in the bottom of the first, following a defensive miscue by NC State.
- The Wolfpack countered in the top of the third to take the lead, 2-1. Freshman Meredith Burroughs ripped an RBI-double to right center, allowing senior Morgan Tharrington to race around from first base to score on the play.  
- Burroughs scored later in the frame, as senior Sara Lippard reached on an error by the ECU third baseman.
- State tacked on four runs in the top of the fourth to extend its lead to 6-1. Freshman Alyssa Compton, senior Renada Davis and junior Lana Van Dyken each singled to load the bases. Sophomore Molly Hutchison drove in the first run of the inning on an RBI groundout to the second baseman.
- Sophomore Tyler Ross reached on an error, as Davis scored from third base to give NC State a 4-1 advantage. With runners at the corners, Ross stole second base and Van Dyken scored on the throw to second base attempting to get Ross.
- NC State's final run of the frame was scored on an RBI double to deep center field by Burroughs, which allowed Ross to score from second base to make it 6-1 in favor of the Pack.
Inside the Box Score
- Davis paced the Wolfpack at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, while Burroughs was 2-for3 with two doubles and two runs batted in (RBI). Compton, freshman Macauley Prickett and Van Dyken each had one hit in the contest.
In the Pitcher's Circle
- Senior Emily Weiman started the contest in the circle for NC State and went the distance to earn her 18th win of the season. She pitched seven innings, struck out 10 batters and only walked two, while not allowing an earned run.
- She retired the side in order from the second through the fourth inning and faced just four batters in the fifth, before retiring the side in order again in the sixth. Weiman struck out the side in the second and sixth innings.
Game Notes
- Davis led off the game with a double down the left field line to extend her program-best reached base safely streak to 28 games.
- With the win, NC State picked up its 12th win in the all-time series against East Carolina to lead the series, 12-6.
On Deck
The Wolfpack will return to action this weekend when it travels to Charlottesville, Va., for a three-game conference series with the Virginia Cavaliers. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m., while Sunday's contest will begin at noon.
