RALEIGH, N.C.- Recently, Gopack.com had the opportunity to catch up with Kayla Brumbaum from the women's swimming and diving team to get to know more about who she is.
A sophomore from Fredricksburg, Va., Brumbaum is a communication major with a concentraion in public relations, and minoring in health. Last month at the NCAA Championships, she earned honorable mention All-America honors as a part of the 200 medley relay team that holds the school record. She was also a member of the school record-holding 400 medley relay that competed at NCAAs, and holds program records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Why she chose NC State: "The reason I chose NC State was because of the amazing coaches, excellent academics and a program with a true team camaraderie that felt like family."
How she got into swimming: "I started swimming when I was eight years old for my neighborhood's summer league team. My parents thought it would be a great way for my brother and I to meet new people and to try a different sport."
Her favorite thing about the Raleigh area: "My favorite thing about the Raleigh area is how it feels like a second home. Everything is so close to where you live and I love how the Wolfpack atmosphere is everywhere you go."
One thing she wants to accomplish before leaving NC State: "One thing I want to accomplish before I leave NC State is to leave an unforgettable mark, whether it's through swimming, academics or leadership."
Someone on the team that motivates her to work her hardest: "I wouldn't say that there is one specific person on the team that motivates me, because each and every single one of my teammates and coaches push me each and everyday to be my best. Without them I would not have accomplished what I have so far."
What she enjoys doing when she's not in class or practicing: "I hate to say it, but I really enjoy relaxing and most importantly I love to sleep. Between schoolwork and practice it's nice to just to be able to enjoy some down time."
Her favorite place to visit: "My favorite place to visit would probably be my home, back in Virginia, where my family lives."
An athlete she idolized growing up: "My favorite athlete growing up was Natalie Coughlin. I have always admired how humble, hard working and versatile she is. She also went through some hard times with injuries and fought back every single time."
How she wants people at NC State to remember her: "I want people at NC State to remember me as a great individual, teammate and friend."
Her favorite song to listen to before a race: "I have a bunch of songs that I listen to before a race, but one that gets me really pumped and in a good mood to swim is, "Do the John Wall," by Troop 41."
