RALEIGH, N.C. -- Senior pitcher Emily Weiman recorded the 100th win of her NC State career and head coach Shawn Rychcik picked up his 100th win with the program, as the Wolfpack defeated North Carolina Central, 8-0, Thursday evening at Dail Stadium.
Weiman becomes the first 100-game winner in NC State history and just the fifth pitcher in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) history to reach the milestone. The Pasadena, Md., native is now one of two active players in Division I softball with 100 or more wins.
Now in his third season with the Pack, Rychcik becomes the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 wins at NC State by accomplishing the feat in just 155 games.
Senior Renada Davis ended the game with a walkoff home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Wolfpack an 8-0 advantage and the run-rule win. It was the 61st round-tripper of her career to tie the ACC record for homers in a career. She now has 11 on the season.
The Wolfpack improves to 29-19 on the year, while the Lady Eagles fall to 16-26.
Rychcik's Review
"You can't win that many games that quickly without good players and good coaches around you, so I give a lot of credit to my assistants Courtney Oliver and Katie Grimes as well as my teams," said Rychcik. "Some great advice I received at the beginning of my career was to surround yourself with good people and I've done that.
"This honor is a huge credit to everyone that's been a part of the program for the last three years, so thank you to all."
On Emily Weiman reaching 100 wins and Renada Davis tying the ACC home run record...
"That's pretty cool for both of them to accomplish that in their final home games. Emily's had that kind of career and that puts her in a different class among NCAA pitchers, because it's a hard honor to get. It's hard to hit home runs sometimes, so that's a heck of a number for Renada to get and I'm really proud of both of them."
Quoting The Players
Emily Weiman
"It's pretty special to get my 100th career win in my last game at Dail Stadium," said Weiman. "It feels really good to reach the milestone and I'm excited about it and proud. I couldn't have done it without my teammates who always have my back and make the plays behind me."
Renada Davis
"It was pretty awesome to have my last at-bat at home be a walkoff home run," Davis said. "I was just trying to get a base hit and I got a pitch I could hit hard and it was a home run."
Quick Hits
- NC State struck first in the contest with a run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Lana Van Dyken doubled to left center then stole third base and scored on a throwing error by the NC Central catcher.
- The Wolfpack scored four runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 5-0. Freshman Meredith Burroughs started the frame with a single up the middle and Van Dyken followed with a hit-by-pitch.
- Senior Morgan Tharrington doubled down the left field line to plate Burroughs from first base and move Van Dyken over to third base to make it 2-0. Sophomore Hannah Yeager singled up the middle, as Van Dyken scampered home from third base to score.
- An RBI groundout by freshman Alyssa Compton allowed Tharrington to score from third base and Yeager scored later in the inning on a wild pitch, as the Pack stretched its lead to 5-0.
- State plated a couple more runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a single by Tharrington. Van Dyken and Maggie Hawkins hit two-out singles prior to Tharrington's at-bat to score on the play.
- Davis' solo shot to center field extended the Wolfpack's lead to 8-0 to end the game due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Inside the Box Score
- Tharrington led the Wolfpack at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, highlighted by three runs batted in and a run scored. Yeager was also 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Van Dyken was 2-for-2 with three runs scored.
- Burroughs, Davis, Hawkins, Hutchison and Ross had one hit apiece in the contest.
In the Pitcher's Circle
