Personal Bests Highlight First Day of Virginia Challenge

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The NC State track and field program wrapped up a successful day at the Virginia Challenge with two more conference qualifying marks and several top-10 finishes against a strong field of competition. Additionally, several members of Wolfpack recorded personal bests in their respective events.
Throws:
Jule Rich recorded a personal best in the discus, and added a top-10 finish in the hammer throw. The senior finished second in discus with a mark of 172'2.00", and 10th in the hammer throw with a throw of 178'11.00".
On the women's side, SeQuoia Watkins had a strong showing for the Pack. The junior finished second in the discus invitational and fifth in the hammer. Watkins earned a season-high mark of 168'0.00" in the discus, which ranks 19th in the East qualifying list.
Jumps:
Amara Bell was the only jumper in competition for the Pack on Friday. Bell finished sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 39'4.50" that marks a new personal best for the sophomore.
Relays:
The 4x100 relay teams continued to improve as both teams recorded season-best times in the event.
Alexis Perry, Tiana Patillo, J'den Williams and Paisley Simmons finished second in their heat with a mark of 46.02.
The men's team of Shannon Patterson, Jonathan Addison, Quashawn Cunningham and Acey Calhoun finished fifth with a time of 40.72.
Sprints:
Addison continued the competition in individual sprints, finishing eighth out of the field of 25 in the 100m dash to lead all NC State sprinters. Addison recorded a mark of 10.66. Cunningham also had a strong showing, finishing first in his heat and 11th overall with a mark of 10.73.
In the 400m, Will Krehnbrink finished 10th with a personal-best mark of 47.61, while Calhoun picked up his first ACC qualifying mark of the season with a time of 48.34.
On the women's side, Patillo also qualified for the conference championships in the 400m with a mark of 55.41.
Mid Distance:
In the 800m, Kenyetta Iyevbele continued her strong start to the outdoor season, crossing the finish line in 2:06.69 for fourth place out of the field of 66. On the men's side, Clay Jones made his outdoor season debut in the 800m with a mark of 1:57.06.
Decathlon:
Grant Rivers is halfway through the decathlon and currently sits in 16th place with 3,152 points. Rivers had a strong showing in the long jump and 100m dash to combine for 1,323 points in the two events.
On Saturday, Rivers will complete the decathlon with events in the 100m hurdles, pole vault, 1,500m, discus throw and javelin throw.
