CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The NC State softball team shut out the Virginia Cavaliers, 6-0, Sunday afternoon at The Park to clinch the series win after the teams split Saturday's doubleheader. It was the second consecutive game that the Wolfpack blanked the Cavaliers.
State moves to 25-16 overall and 9-6 in ACC play, while UVA falls to 13-33 and 4-14 in conference action.
Quick Hits
- NC State broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with five runs to take a 5-0 lead on Virginia. Freshman Meredith Burroughs led off the inning by crushing a solo home run to right center. Junior Lana Van Dyken followed with a bunt single, after noticing the UVA third baseman playing deep.
- After a flyout to center field, freshman Macauley Prickett smacked a single into center field to move Van Dyken over to second base. Classmate Alyssa Compton doubled to left center to score Van Dyken and Prickett on the play to make it 3-0 in favor of the Wolfpack.
- Senior Renada Davis walked on four straight pitches and sophomore Tyler Ross singled to center field to drive in Compton from second base. Davis scored the final run of the frame, when she hustled home from third base on a UVA throw to first base to complete a strikeout.
- The Wolfpack added another run to its total in the fifth to extend its advantage to 6-0, following a sacrifice fly to center field by senior Morgan Tharrington. Burroughs led off the frame with a single to right field and was replaced on the base paths by sophomore Hannah Yeager, who came in to pinch-run.
- Van Dyken doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third base with nobody out and Yeager scored on Tharrington's fly ball to center field.
