Radman's Recap
"The zone that NC State is in, we share it with some of the best schools in the ACC and SEC, who are also some of the top schools in the country. For Rachel, her goal is to stay on a steady pace during the prelims in order to get into the finals each day, then go from there. This week will serve as a good chance for great competition for her. "
"For Harrison, this is another opportunity for him as well to go against some great competition and to learn more about himself as an athlete. This is good chance for him to experience a meet of this level."- Yahya Radman, head diving coach
New Qualification Format
The qualification format for each NCAA Zone Diving meet has changed for this year's events. The changes to be put in place will allow more divers to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships. One of the easiest ways to think about it is in terms of former swimming terminology- `A' cuts and `B' cuts.
During the season, divers must score a certain mark to be invited to NCAA Zones. Mitchell qualified when NC State hosted Georgia for a dual meet in October, while Mumma qualified consistently through out the season and highlighted her platform qualification at the conference championship with a personal best. At each zone, divers must qualify for their invitation to the national championships.
Each of the NCAA's five zones earn a different amount of invite slots, based on how that zone's divers did at last year's NCAAs. The invites are determined by:
• Each zone is guaranteed five women's spots per event and four men's spots per event. (`A' cut)
• Zones earn bonus spots on top of those five/four based on last year's results. (`A' cut)
• Any eligible diver can compete in any of the three diving events at NCAAs, provided he/she earns one of the invitation spots and places top-12 in the other two events at that Zone. (`B' cut)
