ELON, N.C. - After a nine-day break in competition due to inclement weather, the NC State softball team struggled in its return to action as it dropped a 3-2 decision to Elon on Wednesday afternoon at Hunt Softball Park.
The Phoenix moves to 9-4 on the year, while the Wolfpack falls to 7-7.
Quick Hits
- The Wolfpack struck first in the contest when freshman Meredith Burroughs crushed a 3-1 pitch over the center field fence for a solo home run in the second inning. It was her second round-tripper of the season and gave NC State a 1-0 lead.
- Elon countered in the bottom of the second after an RBI-single from Madison Kadlic to score the runner from second base and tie the score, 1-1. The Phoenix plated two more runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
- With the bases loaded, Elon's Emily Cameron singled to center field to score runners from second and third base.
- State trimmed the Elon lead to 3-2 in the fourth following an RBI-single from sophomore Hannah Yeager to score junior Maggie Hawkins, who walked earlier in the frame.
- The Pack threatened in the fifth by putting runners at second and third base with nobody out, but was unable to drive them in and Elon held on for the 3-2 win.
In the Pitcher's Circle
- Senior Emily Weiman started in the circle for the Wolfpack and pitched the first 2.1 innings before giving way to sophomore Courtney Mirabella in the third. Mirabella entered the game with runners on second and third base, but struck out the next two hitters to escape the jam.
- Mirabella recorded strikeouts in seven of the 11 outs that she was responsible for during 3.2 innings pitched.
Inside the Box Score
- Senior Renada Davis led the Pack at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing, while Burroughs, freshman Alyssa Compton, junior Lana Van Dyken and Yeager each had one hit in the contest.

The Wolfpack will open ACC play and have its home opener of 2015 on Saturday, March 7, when it welcomes No. 23 Notre Dame to Dail Stadium. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for noon, while Sunday's single game will also start at noon.
