Swimmer Spotlight: John Newell

RALEIGH, N.C.- Recently, Gopack.com had the opportunity to catch up with John Newell from the men's swimming and diving team to get to know more about who he is.
A senior from Charlotte, N.C., Newell is a sport management major. He is a member of the NCAA Championship team that will compete on March 26-28 in Iowa, and was a part of the 2015 ACC Championship team.
Newell holds three top-10 all-time marks in the men's record book.
Why he chose NC State: "I chose NC State because I felt that it was the best fit for me swimming wise and for school. Even though I was recruited under different coaches than the ones that are here, I feel that I made a great decision to come to Raleigh to swim for the Wolfpack."
How he got into swimming: "I started when I was five years old doing summer league swimming. My parents put me in it just to have some sport to play in between baseball seasons. I started club swimming when I was nine years old."
His favorite thing about being a part of the NC State swimming and diving team: "Honestly, my favorite thing is being able to have friends that support one another and having friends to laugh and train with on a daily basis. When the going gets tough, it's good to have teammates by your side."
Someone among his family/friends that inspires him: "That one person who inspires me is my dad, he tells me about all the things he did when he was growing up and all the sacrifices he made for me. It inspires me because in the way that I have made many sacrifices in my career in swimming."
His favorite thing about the Raleigh area: "Downtown, I enjoy going to eat and walking around downtown. It's a nice city and it's well maintained."
Someone on the team that motivates him to work his hardest: " Michael Camper is the one person on the team that motivates me to work my hardest. He is always there telling me to go faster, fight through the pain and pushing me to do better."
His plans after graduation: "I plan on continuing within the swimming field and begin coaching."
How he wants people at NC State to remember him: " I don't want people to remember me by only how I fast I swim or how cool I was, I want people to remember me by my leadership and enthusiasm to NC State swimming and diving."
His favorite songe to listen to before a race: "My favorite song to listen to before I race is Thunderstruck by AC/DC."
