NC State Softball Earns 11-8 Road Win at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The NC State softball team used an 11-hit performance to defeat the UNCG Spartans, 11-8, Wednesday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium. With the win, the Wolfpack improves to 15-9 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 12-9.
For the first time this season, every starter in the Wolfpack batting lineup had at least one hit as every player contributed to the team win.
Quick Hits
- The Wolfpack got off to a great start in the contest, putting two runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Sophomore Molly Hutchison doubled off the left field fence to score senior Renada Davis from second base to make it 1-0.
- Junior Maggie Hawkins drove in the other run of the first with a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing sophomore Tyler Ross to score from third base.
- Ross crushed a three-run homer in the second inning to give NC State a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Hannah Yeager opened the frame with a leadoff single and Davis reached on an error to score on Ross' sixth home run of the season.
- NC State tacked on two more runs in the third inning following back-to-back RBI singles by freshman Macauley Prickett and sophomore Alyssa Compton, as the Pack owned its largest lead of the day at 7-0.
- The Spartans cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame with four runs to make it 7-4. Nicole Thomas delivered the big blow in the inning with a three-run blast to left field.
- UNCG trimmed the Wolfpack lead to one in the fifth inning with two more runs, but NC State countered in the sixth with four runs to stretch the lead to 11-6.
- With the bases loaded, freshman Meredith Burroughs singled to left field and junior Lana Van Dyken followed with a double to deep right field to make it 10-6. Prickett drove in the final run of the inning on a fielder's choice to the second baseman.
- UNCG scored two runs in the seventh, but would not get any closer as State held on for the win.
In the Pitcher's Circle
- Senior Emily Weiman started in the circle and pitched the first four innings of the contest to earn her 10th win of the season. She struck out six batters and allowed four runs, but none were earned.
- Courtney Mirabella relieved her in the fifth inning and pitched the final three innings to collect her first save of the season and second of her career. The sophomore pitcher fanned three batters and gave up four earned runs.
Inside the Box Score
- For the first time this season, every starter in the Wolfpack batting lineup collected at least one hit. Ross paced the Wolfpack at the plate with a 2-for-4 outing, highlighted by a three-run blast in the second.
- Davis, Hutchison and Van Dyken each doubled in the contest, while Burroughs, Compton, Hawkins, Prickett, Morgan Tharrington and Yeager recorded one hit apiece.
Game Notes
- It was the 14th all-time meeting between the programs, as NC State tallied its 12th win in the series.
- Davis extended her reached base safely streak to 14 games with a leadoff walk in the first inning.
- Prickett recorded her first multi-RBI game in the contest with two runs batted in.

The Wolfpack will return to action in conference play this weekend when it heads to Pittsburgh, Pa., to take on the Pitt Panthers. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m., while Sunday's game will begin at noon.
