NC State baseball dropped a 9-2 decision at No. 19 Miami on Saturday in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Wolfpack (10-6, 2-3 ACC) fell into a 3-0 deficit in the bottom second, but threatened to even the score in the top fifth. State mustered one run to narrow the gap to 3-1 on Andrew Knizner's RBI infield single.
The Hurricanes (14-6, 3-2) stretched the lead to 6-1 in the seventh, then added three insurance runs in the eighth. Chance Shepard pasted an RBI double to the wall in center during the ninth to set the final margin at 9-2.
Preston Palmeiro singled in his first three at-bats before finishing 3-for-4 on the evening for the Wolfpack's only multi-hit performance. Brock Deatherage scored State's first run in a 1-for-5 outing. Jake Armstrong and Chance Shepard each recorded doubles. Bubby Riley walked in a pinch hit at-bat, before scoring on Shepard's RBI.
Curt Britt provided a career-high seven strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of relief work, surpassing his previous best of four set as a sophomore at South Carolina on March 26, 2014 against Coastal Carolina.
Wolfpack starter Brian Brown (2-1) shouldered the loss on three runs, two earned in 3 1/3. Evan Brabrand and Evan Mendoza combined to pitch the eighth.
