NC State baseball fell 3-2 in 10 innings at No. 19 Miami on Friday night in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Pack (10-5, 2-2 ACC) opened up a 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second, before slipping into a 2-2 tie on the Hurricanes' (13-6, 2-2) two-run shot in the third. After six scoreless frames, a solo shot to left on the third pitch of the 10th inning broke the deadlock, granting Miami the walk-off victory.
Tommy DeJuneas (1-1) suffered the first loss of his career, on the same night he would allow his first hit. The freshman had not surrendered a hit over his first five appearances, spanning 10 innings. DeJuneas finished with one earned on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Will Gilbert relieved starter Cory Wilder in the third and worked a career-high 3 2/3 innings of one-hit ball, striking out a pair and walking one while shutting out the Canes. Jon Olczak and Travis Orwig faced one batter each before DeJuneas entered.
Joe Dunand supplied the Wolfpack's lone RBI in his hometown, and squeezed the ninth inning foul ball to send the Pack to extras. Ryne Willard provided State's only multi-hit effort, a 2-for-4 outing with a walk. Logan Ratledge and Joel McKeithan each contributed a double. Ratledge has reached base in all 15 of the Wolfpack's games this season.
Brock Deatherage scored the Pack's first run, reaching on a bunt single to lead off the first, moving to second on Preston Palmeiro's single to left, then scoring on a double steal followed by an error on the throw to second.
Miami scratched originally scheduled starter Thomas Woodrey moments before first pitch. Replacement starter Daniel Sayles lasted only 2/3 of an inning, leaving the Pack to battle through five Miami relievers over the remaining 9 1/3.
NC State returns to action on Saturday at 7 PM for game two of its series at Miami. Streaming is available through Miami's web site for subscribers. Subscriptions to GoPack All-Access do not include the Hurricanes' streaming options. Radio will be handled by 88.1 WKNC.
