NC State's opening game at Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah, Ga. turned into a pitchers' duel straight from the dead ball era, with the Wolfpack coming up on the short end of a 1-0 decision at the hands of Charlotte.

The Pack (4-3) walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, but couldn't push a run across, a sequence that proved to be pivotal. In the top second, the 49ers (2-2) loaded them up and managed the game's only run, an RBI fielder's choice, thanks to Jake Fincher's heady outfield assist to third on a would-be sac fly to center.

Chance Shepard provided the Wolfpack's only multi-hit effort, a 2-for-4 day with a double. Shepard's base hit in the eighth was the Pack's only single out of four hits on the afternoon. Fincher and Tommy DeJuneas contributed a double each, State's remaining hits.

Cory Wilder (1-2) took the tough luck loss on five innings, allowing one earned on four hits and three walks, fanning four. Curt Britt looked sharp in relief, punching out four over the final four frames without giving up a hit. Britt's lone blemish was a walk with two outs in the eighth, quickly followed by a groundout to second.

The Wolfpack returns to action on Saturday, February 28 at 3 p.m. against UNC Greensboro. State's weekend closes with a doubleheader on Sunday.
