NC State baseball passed a gut check test at Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah, Ga., digging out of a 2-0 sixth inning deficit to slip past UNC Greensboro 4-2 on Saturday.
The Wolfpack (5-3) gifted the Spartans (2-6) a pair of runs in the top third on a failed pickoff attempt, a wild pitch, and finally an RBI single to third base. The rough inning was the only speed bump freshman lefty Brian Brown (2-0) hit after mowing down the first six batters in order. Brown worked through the fourth in order, then faced the minimum in the fifth and sixth.
Andrew Knizner helped Brown wiped out that fifth inning baserunner, gunning him down attempting to steal second to end the inning. On the year, Knizner has allowed just one stolen base on five attempts. Jon Olczak entered in the seventh and collected his first save of the year, punching out six in three innings with only one hit allowed.
The Pack's game-winning three-run rally in the sixth came together around two Greensboro errors. Jake Fincher started the comeback with a one-out single off the pitcher's cleats, and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Brock Deatherage singled up the middle to score him, and stole second with two away. Logan Ratledge drove him in, part of a 2-for-4 day with a run and an RBI, then scored on a throwing error to first that helped Knizner reach safely.
Ryne Willard tripled with one down in the seventh, before scoring on a throwing error on Dunand's hard hit ball to third. State held on behind Olczak's sterling pitching performance to preserve the 4-2 win.
NC State returns to action on Sunday, March 1 at 11 a.m. against UNC Greensboro, part of a split doubleheader that includes a 3 p.m. start against Charlotte.
