CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The NC State women's basketball team (14-11, 5-7 ACC) dropped a tough contest at Boston College on Monday evening, falling in overtime by a final score of 64-59. Originally scheduled for Sunday, the game was delayed due to winter weather in the Northeast and resulted in the Pack taking a same-day flight and landing just hours before tip-off.
NC State trailed by 14 in the first half but would battle hard over the course of the second half, cutting the deficit to one on multiple occasions before tying it up at 55-55 to send it to overtime.
The Pack was led in scoring by Len'Nique Brown-Hoskin's game-high 18 points. She was joined in double figures by Miah Spencer's first career double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Jennifer Mathurin (12 points, eight rebounds).
The Wolfpack continues to play with seven scholarship players and nine in total, as the team has lost Krystal "KB" Barrett, Ashley Eli, and Chloe Jackson to injury, while freshman center Sara Boric remains unavailable due to an NCAA ruling.
NC State Notes:
-Len'Nique Brown-Hoskin surpassed 900 career points in the loss. She has scored 788 at NC State and 114 at USC for a combined total of 902.
-With five points on Monday, freshman Chelsea Nelson has scored at least one point in all 25 games this season.
-Monday's game marked the first time since Dec. 19 when Dominique Wilson did not score 10+ points (12-game streak).
-This was NC State's first overtime game of the season.
-The Pack has hit 5+ three-pointers in 22 of 25 games this season.
-Miah Spencer has scored in double figures 17 times this season and 30 times in her career.
Both sides were hot from three-point range to start the game, as the two combined for a 6-7 success rate beyond the arc for an early 9-9 tie. The Eagles would use a 10-0 run over the course of the next 3:52 to take a 19-9 lead with 13:25 remaining in the half. Boston College would extend this lead to as many as 14 points (26-12) before the Wolfpack would score eight of the half's final 13 points to trail 31-20 at the halftime break.
NC State came out of the break inspired and promptly ripped off a 12-2 run to pull within just one point (33-32) when Mathurin scored down low with 14:47 to play in the contest. The Eagles would methodically respond, however, extending their lead back out to 11 points (53-42) with only 4:35 remaining.
Beginning with two free throws by Chelsea Nelson, the Pack ended the final 4:28 of regulation on a 13-2 run which saw the game deadlocked at 55-55 on a Brown-Hoskin three-pointer with 29 seconds to go. The senior captain then stole the ball on Boston College's next in-bounds play, giving State the final look of regulation. Brown-Hoskin drove and attempted a difficult shot which did not fall as time expired in regulation.
The Pack's first lead of the game came in overtime when Brown-Hoskin hit a mid-range jumper to make it 59-58 in favor of State with 2:42 remaining. Boston College would then close out the game by scoring the final six points of the contest to claim the victory.
NC State will return to action at home on Thursday, Feb. 19 vs. Miami. Tip-off between the Wolfpack and Hurricanes is set for 7 p.m. inside Reynolds Coliseum.
