GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The NC State women's basketball team (9-4) lost the championship game of the 2015 Gator Holiday Classic to a red hot (RV/RV) Florida team Monday afternoon, falling by a final score of 79-72.
Jennifer Mathurin (16 points) scored in double figures for the 10th time this season and narrowly missed her sixth career double-double with eight rebounds. Chelsea Nelson (15 points, seven rebounds) and Miah Spencer (12 points) joined Mathurin in double figures. For her strong performance throughout the tournament (36 points, 17 rebounds, 9-14 shooting), Mathurin was named to the all-tournament team.
With the Wolfpack trailing by just two points (31-29) at the halftime break, the Gators used an explosive third quarter to claim control of the contest and earn their 11th straight victory. Florida's (11-1) consistent use of a full-court press proved difficult for the Wolfpack to handle, as NC State committed a season-high 30 turnovers in the loss.
The Wolfpack fought admirably at the end, scoring 32 points in the fourth quarter to pull within five points (77-72) late in the game. NC State outscored Florida 32-23 over the course of the final 10 minutes.
NC State shot 21-59 (.356) from the field in the loss, a mark which included a 7-28 (.250) success rate from distance. The Wolfpack rebounded very well, pulling down 46 boards compared to 34 by the host Gators. Florida shot 27-63 (.429) from the field and was led offensively by Eleanna Christinaki (18 points) and Cassie Peoples (16).
An exciting first half which included four ties and five lead changes ended with the host Gators holding a narrow 31-29 lead. Mathurin led all scorers in the opening half with nine points (3-6 shooting) while Carlee Schuhmacher led all rebounders with seven (four offensive). NC State shot 9-29 (.310) from the field and 4-14 (.286) from distance. True to their high-energy defense all season, which ranks No. 2 nationally in steals, the Gators forced the Wolfpack into 19 turnovers in the first half, from which they scored 16 points.
Following the Christmas holiday, NC State opens Atlantic Coast Conference play at No. 23 Miami on Wednesday, December 30. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
