Volleyball’s Comeback at Syracuse Falls Short, 3-1

Wolfpack records more kills than the Orange despite the loss
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Despite recording more kills in the match, the NC State volleyball team's comeback effort at Syracuse fell short Sunday afternoon, 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16), inside the Women's Building.
The Wolfpack moves to 14-12 overall and 3-11 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while the Orange improve to 18-7 and 9-5 in conference action.
Match Notes
- NC State recorded 54 kills in the match, while Syracuse tallied 52. The young Wolfpack squad committed 33 attacking errors and the 'Cuse only made 13, which proved to be the difference.
- The Wolfpack won the third set for the 19th time this season, as the squad has only lost the third frame seven times this year.
Match Rewind
- NC State started the match well and held an early 5-4 lead, but an 8-0 run by Syracuse allowed the Orange to gain control of the first set and they went on to win it, 25-17.
- In the second set, Syracuse scored seven of eight points midway through the frame to gain a comfortable advantage and claimed the set by a 25-17 score.
- Out of the intermission, NC State rebounded with a strong third set en route to a 25-20 set win. Leading 6-4, the Wolfpack scored five unanswered points to take an 11-4 lead forcing a Syracuse timeout.
- The Orange rallied to pull within two at 19-17, but a Pack timeout helped halt the rally and State held on for a 25-20 third-set victory.
- Trailing 10-8 in the fourth set, Syracuse went on a 7-2 run to stretch its lead and claimed the set, 25-16, to win the overall match, 3-1.
Top Performers
- Sophomore Perry Ramsey led NC State offensively with 16 kills, while classmate Julia Brown swatted 14 kills.
- At the setter position, freshman Becky Porter and junior Maggie Speaks split time with the former handing out 24 assists and the latter 18.
- Junior libero Rachel Eppley tallied a match-high 16 digs and freshman Makenzie Kuchmaner collected nine digs.
