NC State Volleyball Falls in Hard-Fought Contest at Duke

Sophomore Julia Brown tallies a match-high 13 kills
DURHAM, N.C. – Despite recording more kills and tallying more digs, the NC State volleyball team dropped a hard-fought 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) decision at Duke Wednesday afternoon inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Wolfpack falls to 15-16 and 4-15 in ACC play, while Duke moves to 16-13 overall and 11-8 in league play.
Bunn's Beat
Opening statement…
"We played with good energy and we were right there, competing in every set," said head coach Bryan Bunn. "Unfortunately, we're still making some young errors and not recovering well from them.
"We can't make errors down the stretch and we have to learn that. We just have to keep learning."
Match Rewind
Set One
- Both teams got off to great starts in the match, as the score was very close early in the set. Duke looked to take control of the frame with a 5-0 run to grab a 15-10 lead, resulting in an NC State timeout.
- Out of the break, the Wolfpack won 10 of the next 15 points to knot the score at 20. Duke countered by winning the next two points and then the teams traded the next four rallies.
- Facing set point, NC State saved set point once following a kill by sophomore Perry Ramsey to trim the lead to 24-23, but Duke converted its next opportunity to win the first set, 25-23, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set Two
- Despite outhitting the Blue Devils in the second set, .250 - .179, the Wolfpack was unable to claim the win, as Duke edged NC State in the frame, 25-23.
- Trailing 16-12, the Pack called a timeout and went on a 7-4 run forcing Duke to use its first timeout of the frame. A kill by senior Morgan Cormier to tie the score at 22 forced the Blue Devils to call their second timeout.
- Duke senior Emily Sklar put down a kill to put her team ahead, 24-23, and a combination block by Leah Meyer and Alyse Whitaker gave the Devils the second-set win.
Set Three
- The Blue Devils raced out to a 6-3 lead in the third set, but the Wolfpack countered to quickly erase the deficit and take a 15-13 lead following a 6-1 run.
- A 3-0 run by Duke gave the squad a 19-18 and the Wolfpack was unable to regain the lead, as the Blue Devils went on to win the frame, 25-21, and the match, 3-0.
Top Performers
- Cormier led the Wolfpack offensively with seven kills on 15 swings to record a .400 attacking percentage. Sophomore Julia Brown tallied a match-high 13 kills, while classmate Perry Ramsey swatted also reached double-digits with 10.
- At the setter position, junior Maggie Speaks handed out 40 assists to go along with eight digs and two kills.
- Defensively, junior libero Rachel Eppley notched 21 digs and Ramsey chipped in with 10 digs to record her fourth double-double of the season.

NC State will conclude its 2015 campaign at Wake Forest Saturday afternoon. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. inside Reynolds Gym.
