Volleyball Wins Season Finale at Wake Forest, 3-1

Sophomore Julia Brown smacks a match-high 16 kills in the contest
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The NC State volleyball team closed out the 2015 season on a positive note Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 26-24) win at Wake Forest inside Memorial Gym.
The Wolfpack finishes the season with a 16-16 overall record and 5-15 mark in ACC play, while Wake Forest ends the year at 12-20 and 4-16.
NC State only loses two seniors from this year's squad for next season and has a strong nucleus returning, highlighted by six of its seven starters. In addition, the Wolfpack inked one of the best recruiting classes in program history in November, which figures to have an immediate impact next season.
Match Rewind
- The start of the match was tightly-contested until a 7-0 run allowed NC State to take control of the first set at 18-8.
- The Wolfpack closed out the first frame with three unanswered points thanks to a couple of attacking errors by Wake Forest and a kill from freshman Blayke Hranicka to win it, 25-15, and take a 1-0 lead in the overall match.
- NC State recorded an attacking percentage of .361 in the first set with 17 kills, while limiting Wake Forest to a .227 clip and only eight kills.
- In the second set, the Wolfpack led throughout much of the frame but struggled down the stretch and the Demon Deacons came away with a 25-22 set-win to tie the match at one.
- NC State regrouped in the third set and never trailed en route to the 25-22 victory. The Pack raced out to an 11-5 lead forcing Wake to call a timeout.
- Wake Forest trimmed the NC State lead to one at 20-19, but the Wolfpack never relinquished the advantage and held on for the third-set win.
- The Wolfpack also started the fourth set strong, jumping out to an 11-6 advantage, which resulted in a Demon Deacons timeout. State enjoyed its largest lead of the frame at 17-10, before Wake rallied to trim the deficit.
- After denying Wake Forest its first set point opportunity, senior Morgan Cormier put down a kill to make it 25-24 and a ball handling error by the Deacons gave NC State the 26-24 fourth-set win and 3-1 victory in the match.
Top Performers
- Sophomore outside hitter Julia Brown swatted a match-high 16 kills to tally her 10th consecutive match with 10+ kills, while Cormier made a #STATEment in her final match with 14 kills and a .346 attacking percentage.
- Hranicka also reached double-digit kills with 12.
- At the setter position, junior Maggie Speaks dished out 47 assists to go along with nine digs and six blocks.
- Defensively, freshman Kassie Kasper charted 13 digs and sophomore Perry Ramsey collected 11.
