RALEIGH – The NC State women's basketball team began its 42nd season in fine fashion Friday evening inside PNC Arena, picking up a 70-64 win over visiting Villanova to earn the program's 13th straight season-opening victory.
Led by four Wolfpack players scoring in double figures and one—Jennifer Mathurin—recording a double-double, NC State (1-0) raced out to a large 19-point lead and was able to withstand a furious game-tying comeback by the Wildcats (0-1) to hold on down the stretch.

-Dominique Wilson (21 points), Jennifer Mathurin (19), Ashley Williams (12), and Miah Spencer (11) scored in double figures Friday night.
-Williams earned her first career start and played 33 minutes.

NC State held a seven-point lead at the end of the first quarter and doubled it heading into halftime, leading the Wildcats 40-26.
Villanova responded in the second half, outscoring the Wolfpack 20-14 in the third quarter to cut the deficit. Led by a very strong offensive performance from Caroline Coyer, who scored a game-high 24 points on 10-18 shooting, the Wildcats tied the game at 62 points apiece when Adrianna Hahn hit a three-pointer with 2:04 remaining. The Wolfpack responded, first with a Spencer mid-range jumper, scoring eight of the final ten points to earn the win.
NC State almost immediately returns to action on Sunday afternoon against High Point. Tipoff between the Wolfpack and Panthers is set for 2 p.m. from Broughton High School's Holliday Gymnasium.
