WILMINGTON, N.C. - Freshman Laura Kowohl shot a 2-under 70 to lead the 26th-ranked NC State women's golf team at the Landfall Tradition on Friday. NC State is sixth in the team standings after the first round.
"I started pretty well with a birdie and was confident for the upcoming holes," Kowohl said.
Kowohl, tied for fourth overall, birdied four holes on the day and finished her round with seven straight pars. She was one of 14 players to card four birdies on the day. Rachael Taylor (+1) shot 73 on the day, with three birdies. She is among the tournament leaders on par-3 scoring, shooting 2-under on the par 3 holes at the Pete Dye course.
"I hit really good drives and had many birdie opportunities," Kowohl said. "Unfortunately, I didn't hole many of them on the back nine, but I'm really happy about my score today. I'm going with a confident feeling into the next round and hope to make some more birdies."
The other three NC State players - India Clyburn, Leonie Bettel and Sarah Bae - each shot 4-over par 76.
Duke (-1) leads the tournament by two shots over Oklahoma State (+1). Host school UNC Wilmington (+2) is third. Other ACC schools include Clemson (8th) and Virginia (10th) while UNC Chapel Hill is at the bottom of the team standings. Friday's top individual was Notre Dame's Isabella DiLisio, who shot a 5-under 67.
The second round of the Landfall Tradition begins Saturday morning. The final round is a shotgun start on Sunday morning.
