Horton and Dempster earn two wins on Monday
CARY, N.C. – For the third straight year, a doubles team from NC State will play in the finals of the ITA Carolina Regional. Ian Dempster and Nick Horton advanced to the final round of the competition after two thrilling victories Monday at Cary Tennis Park.
The 41st-ranked duo opened the day with a win over Ben Kelley and Joel Roberts from Presbyterian. The teams were in a seesaw battle throughout the match to force a decisive third-set tiebreaker. NC State's pair edged UNC to win, 7-5, 5-7, 1-0(8).
In the semifinals, Dempster and Horton faced off against the upset-minded Charlotte team of Vikram Hundal and Jordi Masslle-Ferrer. NC State dominated in the first, winning, 6-0. The tables turned in the second, as Charlotte's duo won the set, 6-4. However, Dempster and Horton rebounded in the final set to win the overall match, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0(3)
