CARY, N.C. - The NC State men's tennis team opened the ITA Carolina Regional with six wins Friday. Nick Horton and 71st-ranked Simon Norenius advanced from the round of 128 to the round of 32 in the main draw.
Round of 128:
Nick Horton opened the day for the Wolfpack after defeating Jonathan Walker of Gardner Webb, 6-1, 6-2. After a rain delay, Norenius followed with a dominating 6-1, 6-0, win over NC A&T's Keiston Davis.
Ian Dempster and Shoti Meparidze both dropped close matches in the opening round to formable opponents. Meparidze dropped a match to Wake's Jonathan Ho, while Dempster fell in a three-set thriller to Furman's Matt Browne that was decided in a tiebreak.
Round of 64:
Horton knocked off Davidson's David Hager in straight sets to improve to 2-0 on the day and 5-1 on the season. Horton won, 6-1, 6-2. Norenius followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Duke's Jason Lapidus.
Consolation Round of 64:
Meparidze bounced back in the consolation bracket to defeat Ben Horst of Furman. The sophomore won in straight sets, 7-6 (2), 6-3. Dempster also rebounded in the doubles draw, defeating Jack Thomas of Wofford, 6-4, 6-1.
