Home Runs Power Wolfpack Softball to Two Wins

Wolfpack wins game one, 6-4 and game two, 18-0
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team won both games of a doubleheader held on Thursday evening at Dail Stadium against Pitt Community College. The Wolfpack defeated the Bulldogs 6-4 in game one and 18-0 in the second contest.
Game One Highlights
- Redshirt junior Hanna Sommer clubbed a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give NC State a 6-4 lead and that proved to the difference in the contest.
- Brittany Nimmo, a freshman from Springfield, Mo., earned the win after tossing 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of sophomore Harli Hubbard.
- Junior Courtney Mirabella pitched the seventh inning and struck out two of the three batters she faced to collect the save. Hubbard and Nimmo each had seven strikeouts.
- The Wolfpack took a 1-0 lead early in the first inning following a single by senior Maggie Hawkins to score classmate Lana Van Dyken.
- Sommer's blast powered a five-run fifth for NC State giving the squad a lead that it never relinquished.
Game Two Highlights
- The Wolfpack bats came alive in the second game of the twin bill, as NC State collected 20 hits and scored 18 runs.
- Juniors Molly Hutchison and Morgan Medford, along with sophomore Meredith Burroughs and freshman Brittany Nimmo all homered in the contest. Medford and Hutchison hit back-to-back home runs.
- Freshman Cheyenne Balzer turned in a strong performance with a two-RBI double down the right field line and an RBI-single. She also scored three runs, to go along with three RBI.
- Burroughs and Medford also had three RBI in the contest and Hutchison drove in a pair of runs.
- NC State scored four runs in the first, three in the second and third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the sixth to score at least once in every inning.
- Mirabella started in the circle and pitched five innings, striking out nine batters, walking just one and only allowing two hits. Hubbard closed out the game by pitching the final two innings, striking out five of the seven batters she faced.
On Deck
NC State will return to fall action Saturday when Longwood visits Dail Stadium. First pitch of the twin bill is slated for 11 a.m.
