Wolfpack outblocks Cavaliers, 10-5
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23) decision to Virginia on Saturday night inside Holliday Gym. The match featured 21 ties, but the Pack was unable to break through despite tying the score in the first and third sets down the stretch.
NC State moves to 12-6 (1-5 ACC), while Virginia improves to 12-5 (4-2 ACC).
Match Rewind
- The Pack controlled the opening frame for the majority of the set, but a three-point run near the end from Virginia was enough to separate the two teams, as UVa won the first set, 25-22.
- After trading points early, the Cavaliers pulled away from the Wolfpack in the middle of the second set. Despite saving three set points, NC State's comeback fell short and Virginia took the second set, 25-18.
- In the third set, the Wolfpack fell behind, but kept the score close. As the set neared its end, NC State went on a 6-3 run to bring the score within a point. Three Wolfpackers recorded kills during the run.
- Sophomore Perry Ramsey forced a second match point after earning her eighth kill of the night, but on the following play Virginia recorded a kill to end the match.
Match Notables
- After missing the previous two matches due to injury, junior Maggie Speaks was eased back into action against the Cavs. Speaks did well in her return, earning 20 assists, three kills and two digs.
- Becky Porter made her third consecutive start at setter. The freshman was solid in the early stretches of the match. She earned a kill to make the score, 4-3, in favor of the Cavs before assisting on a block and serving up an assist to put NC State up, 6-4, in the first set.
- Sophomore Julia Brown was NC State strongest attacking threat. She registered five first-set kills and concluded the match with a team-high 12 kills and a .333 hitting percentage.
