Jarred, Watkins Claim Event Titles in Gymnastics Season Opener

RALEIGH, N.C.- Highlighted by first-place performances from junior All-American Brittni Watkins and senior Lane Jarred, the NC State gymnastics team opened its season as it hosted No. 20 Denver Friday evening inside Reynolds Coliseum.
The Pioneers concluded its season opener with a final score of 194.500, while the Wolfpack finished the meet with a total score of 192.025.
Vault
As a team, NC State recorded a score of 48.875 in its first event of the season. Watkins tallied a score of 9.825 to tie for first place with Denver's Emily Barrett and Rachel Fielitz, while freshmen Chelsea Knight and Allie Wismer and Jarred each recorded a 9.775.
Sophomore Amanda Fillard posted a 9.725 to round out the top five scores for the Wolfpack on vault.
Uneven Bars
NC State charted a team score of 47.600 on bars after being forced to count a fall.
Watkins led the Pack after charting a 9.750 to take second place in the team's second event of the night. Knight contributed with a 9.675 in her debut for NC State. Balance Beam
On beam, the Pack posted a score of 47.950 on beam as Jarred tied for first place honors with a score of 9.700, followed by junior Michaela Woodford who tied for third place with a 9.650.
Floor Exercise
Junior Aubrey Hine led the way for NC State on its final event of the night with a 9.725, while Jarred charted a 9.700.
All-Arounders
Watkins earned an all-around score of 38.800 to take second place in the all-around competition, while Woodford recorded a 38.450.
Up Next
NC State will return to action when it hosts Washington on Jan. 16 inside Reynolds Coliseum for its second meet of the season. Competition is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
